Elon Musk introduced the wall-mounted battery pack last night. It's called the "Powerwall" and uses rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The Powerwall can capture energy from solar panels for use at night. It can also charge from the power company when rates are low and then power a home when rates are high or be used in place of a gas generator in the event of a power outage. The system is scalable from homes to large businesses and is being installed at some Target stores and Amazon facilities. The largest arrays of batteries are designed for use by utility companies.
The Powerwall will start shipping this summer with a starting price of $3000.
