Woman killed, 2 taken to hospitals after duplex fire in Pittsburgh neighborhood

PITTSBURGH — A woman died Friday morning in a fire at a duplex in Pittsburgh’s Greenfield neighborhood.

Three people were in the duplex when the fire started shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Bigelow Street.

Helen Cassidy, 88, was on the second floor of the unit where the fire started, authorities said. She died at the scene. A man in the same unit made it out and was taken to a hospital in serious conditions.

A woman was in the adjacent unit of the duplex. She got out on her own and was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation, officials said.

Two firefighters who became dizzy were checked out by paramedics.

It took an hour and a half to get the fire out, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
