1922 Sears mail-order home in McCandless is piece of lived-in history

MCCANDLESS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — An “Osborn” model Sears mail-order home built in 1922 in McCandless is a piece of lived-in history.

According to our partners at TribLive.com, the owner had no idea what it was when she bought it in 1998. She just like the way it looked.

Beginning in the late 1800s, catalogs were sent out with everything a family could ever need to buy. That included a home kit and everything needed to furnish it. It could be delivered to your nearest railroad depot for pickup.

From 1908 to 1940, Sears sold nearly 75,000 home kits.
