Amazon again expanding in our region

ALEPPO, Pa. — Amazon is expanding once again in the Pittsburgh region.

The company is taking over the old FedEx facility in Aleppo.

When FedEx Home Delivery left its 70,000-square-foot facility a few years ago. township officials hoped another major company would soon fill its spot.

“That loss was significant and it would be great to have that space filled again,” said Matthew Doebler, president of the Aleppo Board of Commissioners.

Amazon will be opening a flex warehouse, a program that pays drivers $18 to $25 an hour to deliver local packages.

Although the township's tax base wasn't affected by FedEx leaving the industrial park since real estate taxes are paid by the property owner, officials do look forward to collecting a business privilege tax from the warehouse's next occupant.

“I think it’s great to have all of our real estate in Aleppo filled and particularly have our business real estate filled,” Doebler said. “I think people in Aleppo and the greater Sewickley area would probably appreciate the opportunity to pick up little side jobs.”

Channel 11 contacted Amazon, the property owner and the real estate firm marketing the company, but did not receive a response.
