Arrest made in year-old fatal overdose in Murrysville

MURRYSVILLE, Pa. — Almost a year to the day that Paul Lucas was found unresponsive from an overdose in the bedroom of his Murrysville home, police made a second arrest in his death.

It’s welcome news for Lucas’ mother.

“We’re really grateful they’ve been able to go up the chain because, in this past year, I met a lot of parents in the same boat who lost children in similar circumstances and they don’t even get this much closure,” said Michele Rubin.

Demetrius Christmas of Turtle Creek is now charged with drug delivery resulting in death, and it’s not the first time.

Jeffrey Gettemy Jr. died from an overdose last June at a home on Lemington Avenue in Greensburg, and authorities say Christmas is responsible for that death, as well.

Investigators say the heroin Lucas and Gettemy bought traced back to Christmas, and both doses contained a lethal mixture of fentanyl and heroin.

“And If I could say anything to him, I’d ask him if his mother was proud of him, honestly, because he’s basically killed two people,” Rubin said.

Since Lucas’ death, Rubin has become part of the solution to bring education and awareness to the forefront. And she hopes prosecutions keep coming.

“If it saves one life, if it saves one parent the pain we’ve gone through this past year, it’s worth it,” she said. “But again, I’d like to see it go higher.”
