BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — A number of parents and students filed in to the Big Beaver Falls Area School District board meeting on Thursday night, upset that the district is not accommodating kids with medical conditions under the mask mandate.
“I wear my mask everyday because I have a 3-year-old little brother at home. And if he gets sick because of the stupidity in this world, I don’t know what I’d do with myself,” said student Mikia Lawrence.
“It’s uncomfortable. It’s hard for him to breathe especially in the middle school with no A/C. It’s hot in there,” Tristan Adams said.
“The mask gave her a migraine so bad that it put her in a tizzy. I found my child on 8th Avenue by herself spinning in circles because she had a migraine,” Misty Evans said.
Adams and Evans presented the district with a 504 plan which is for children with medical conditions or disabilities. They said their kids are still being required to mask up on school property, however.
Channel 11′s Sarafina James took their concerns straight to the superintendent.
“A couple of the parents here went through the process. And it was just started a day or so ago,” said Dr. Donna Nugent. “It does take some time. It can’t be instantaneous and we have to sit down and work through this process together.”
Nugent said because the mask mandate just went into effect, the district needs more time to work to process medical exemptions and accommodate students.
