1 hurt in explosion at landfill in Rostraver Township

ROSTRAVER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — One person was hurt in an explosion that happened Wednesday morning at a landfill in Rostraver Township, officials said.

Digging was taking place when a methane pipe exploded at the Westmoreland County Landfill on Conner Lane, officials said.

The person who was hurt was taken to a hospital and then flown to UPMC Mercy’s burn unit, according to the Rostraver Central Fire Department.

“It was reported the scene is under control and there are no evacuations at this time,” a Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety spokesperson said.

Ro Rozier, a spokesperson for the landfill, sent us the following statement:

“Today Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill sends sincere appreciation to first responders who offered their quick assistance at our site in Belle Vernon. They swiftly evaluated one employee who is now being treated for non-life threatening injuries. The employee was part of an experienced crew performing routine maintenance on a collection line when a small gas explosion occurred. Repairs to the line are in progress and work is returning to normal with a commitment to the highest standards of safety for our employees and our community.”
