Fishing license no longer needs to be worn while fishing in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa. — You will no longer have to have your fishing license displayed while fishing in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Board of Commissioners approved on Tuesday the removal of the requirement for anglers.

It has been a long-standing requirement that a fishing license has to be worn on an outer garment while fishing. That has been updated to a general possession requirement, meaning anyone who is fishing needs to have a license with them and must show it to a PFBC law enforcement officer upon request.

The change is not immediate, officials said. It will take effect upon publication in the Pennsylvania Bulletin.

“With this change, we’re making things more convenient for our anglers,” PFBC Executive Director Tim Schaeffer said in a news release. “By allowing people to simply carry their license in a pocket or in their wallet, rather than pinning it to an outer garment, we hope to hear about fewer licenses being lost and the cost associated with replacing them. It also provides greater consistency with the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s hunting license display requirement, so it should prevent any further confusion among hunters and anglers.”
