Man killed by police after beating woman in Lawrence Co. may have killed wife years ago

PITTSBURGH — Channel 11 is learning new information about the man police shot and killed in Lawrence County after he refused to stop beating a woman, ultimately killing her. After looking at Juan Carter Hernandez’s background, he may have killed before.

According to court papers, New Wilmington police ordered Hernandez to drop the weapon and when he would not stop assaulting the woman, an officer shot and killed him. State police said Hernandez was living in Campbell, Ohio.

According to an article in the Jacksonville Daily News in North Carolina, a man with the same name age 26 at the time, pleaded guilty to second degree murder for killing his then-wife in 2011. Police there said Hernandez shot and killed his wife in their home over an argument about rent money. He was sentenced to 8-10 years for her murder.

Channel 11 contacted law enforcement and investigators in both Pennsylvania and North Carolina to confirm that this was the same man. We haven’t heard back yet.
