PITTSBURGH — After steering a Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream truck throughout the South Hills much of last year, serving up cones and pints on the road that proved a welcome respite from the pandemic, Kayleigh Lucas and Kate Smerecky now have a permanent place to park with a full-fledged shop to open soon in South Fayette.
The partners are the first franchisees of Millie’s. They have a lease in place to take over a now closed YoFresh Frozen Yogurt location in the Gateway Shops, aiming to open on the first day of spring.
It’s a new venture that demonstrates the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic both in the closing of YoFresh and in the expansion of Millie’s, which first opened a new production facility in Homestead last February only to face limited demand for the added capacity as Covid-19 took hold of much of the American economy only a month later.
