Mother accused of leaving children home in deplorable conditions

JEANNETTE, Pa. — A Jeannette mother who was arrested for allegedly stealing a man’s SUV while drunk is facing even more charges after police searched her house.

Police arrested Amber Travener stole an SUV on Clay Avenue in Jeannette then returned it while the owner was on the phone with 911.

Police arrived and arrested her, and they say while she was in custody she told them her two kids were at home with a man she only knew by his last name.

When police arrived at the home, the woman's young daughter answered the door crying because she didn't know where he mother was. That girl and her 7-month-old brother we living in filth, according to police, with flies, moldy food and filthy bathrooms.

“I feel it’s very sad because there’s a little female and a newborn male that they are not given a chance in life that they deserve," a neighbor said.

The man who was supposed to be watching the children allegedly told the kids 'good luck' then took off out the back door when police arrived.

He was later identified as Stephen Riddle and is charged with child endangerment and fleeing from police.

Tavener is charged with child endangerment, theft and DUI.
