Neighbors share frustration over Seavey Road flooding in Shaler Twp.

SHALER TWP., Pa. — Heavy rain and flooding on a Shaler Township have gone hand-in-hand over the last few years. And yesterday was no different.

Seavey Road in Millvale and Shaler flooded again Monday afternoon following storms in the area. The road reopened Tuesday morning.

A likely failure of a privately owned pipe is at least partially to blame for constant flooding.

A spokesman for PennDOT confirmed the privately owned pipe cannot handle the flow of water causing it to run into the roadway. While declining to say who owns the pipe, the agency recently sent a letter to the property owner about fixing it.

When heavy rain falls it overwhelms the pipe causing the water to run on the road.

Ultimately PennDOT does have the authority to come in, replace that private line and bill the owner. Whether they will actually take that step remains unclear.

But for neighbors like Dan Pauley, they want to see something done so they can stop worrying about their homes flooding.

“It looked like a river out here, it sure did. It was pretty bad,” Pauley said. “We all upset about it. Some of these houses are getting flooded down here. I know it’s private property, but come on. He can see what the problem is. Put a new pipe in and you’re done. It’s a simple fix.”
