New housing, retail and green space coming to North Shore

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto announced Wednesday that there will be new housing, parking and green space coming to the North Shore over the next few years.

The plan includes the first ever residential development in the area between PNC Park and Heinz Field at the corner of Mazeroski Way and General Robinson Boulevard, where Gold Lot 4 is now located – which is currently a popular parking and tailgating space.

All that pregame space will be going away, but in its place will be new apartments, retail space, and green space.

The Stadium Authority board, Pirates and Steelers agreed on the development project. According to a release, the project will include the following:

  • An 8-story high-rise building with four floors of approximately 48 residential units, and four floors of retail and office space
  • A privately constructed 445-space, six-floor public parking garage, with approximately 72 spaces reserved for building residents
  • A public courtyard and greenspace with retail and entertainment components

Baseball and football fans may be losing a few hundred pregaming parking spaces, but according to Pirates owner Bob Nutting, the new public green space will give fans a great gathering area.

Meanwhile, plans for Gold Lot 2, which is closer to Heinz Field, are still up in the air. The Stadium Authority will vote to extend that deadline to 2024.
