Olympian Gatlin says COVID-19 safety measures are beyond safe

TOKYO — One US Olympics bound athlete said COVD-19 prevention measures in place are beyond safe.

Sprinter Justin Gatlin said he was happy with the protocols in place during his visit to Japan to participate in an Olympics test event.

Gatlin said he felt a little isolated, but understands the measures are necessary to keep everyone safe.

“I enjoyed it. I wish I could have saw more events. We needed a chance to see the warm-up area, but I think that it’s going to be a great championship, a great Olympics,” Gatlin said.

A new poll showed nearly 60% of all people in Japan want the Olympics to be canceled.

Japan has extended a state of emergency in Tokyo until the end of May and has struggled to contain a surge in COVID-19 cases.
