Pittsburgh Public Schools planning for full in-person learning by fall

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Public Schools officials said they are planning for full in-person learning by the start of next school year.

A number of families had previously told Channel 11 they were considering moving out of the district or putting their kids in private schools if the district didn’t return to the classroom next school year.

District leaders said with Thursday’s announcements from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the CDC, nothing will change through the end of the current school year. Masks will still be required for students and staff members, and classrooms will continue to be set up for social distancing.

“I think everyone knows by now these masks are a necessary evil. If we can discard them, that would be better off for our teachers and our students,” said Superintendent Anthony Hamlet.

There is also no end in sight for the bus driver crunch impacting the district, still leading to questions about how students will get to school in the fall.
