“It’s hard to see it go,” said Matt Swiantek, a customer. “I mean it’s been a staple in the community for many, many years. I’ve known the owners for a long time. It’s hard to see it go.”

The Elrama Tavern has been in business for 70 years, changing ownership over the years, but always keeping a customer base that attracted far and wide.

Elrama fire chief Lenny Bailey said there were a handful of employees and customers inside at the time, and they believe the fire started behind the building.

“We believe it started in a back corner of the building,” Bailey said. “They were burning cardboard boxes, we believe it started back there and the hot embers flew into the basement.”

The wind only fanned those flames and smoke, as firefighters worked to put out hot spots.

One employee ended up being taken to the hospital because she was having trouble breathing.

Chief Bailey told Channel 11 that the fire marshal is still investigating to figure out the exact cause of the fire.

Customers are hopeful the owner can rebuild. There is no word yet if that’s possible but the tavern posted on Facebook, saying they’re thankful for the first responders and asked for prayers as they navigate through this tragic event.

A GoFundMe has been put together by local students to raise funds to rebuild the tavern. Click here to donate.
