Rabid raccoon found in Allegheny County community

MT. LEBANON, Pa. — A racoon that was found in Mt. Lebanon tested positive for rabies, the Allegheny County Health Department said Wednesday.

The raccoon was reported on Morrison Drive in Mt. Lebanon and was brought to the Health Department’s laboratory for testing.

Rabies is transmitted by animal bites and scratches and is almost always fatal when left untreated, according to the Health Department. Anyone who is bitten, scratched or otherwise exposed to saliva from an animal should immediately clean the area with soap and water, get emergency medical treatment and report it to the Health Department by calling 412-687-2243.

People in Allegheny County are asked to watch for unusual behavior in animals and report it to a local animal control service, the police or the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Pets should be kept up to date on their rabies vaccinations.

So far in 2020, 19 animals in Allegheny County have tested positive for rabies. Eight were bats, seven were raccoons, three were cats and one was a groundhog.
