PITTSBURGH — With many preparing to ring in the New Year at home, Harry Schlegel, the Mayor of Plum, was preparing to head out.
“Tonight, this is our habit on New Year’s. We’re going out for dinner,” he said.
The first term mayor said he has reservations at a restaurant in Plum. Despite Gov. Wolf’s restrictions, the restaurant opened last week and has been busy ever since. Officials with John Anthony’s declined to comment.
“Last night, this restaurant was packed. 50% capacity. People wore masks. Tables were clean. All protocol was followed. Totally safe,” Schlegel said.
Another restaurant offering a New Year’s Eve dinner is Jean Louis in Dormont, advertising on social media. Schlegel said restaurants are hurting though.
“They made the tough decision to open and I feel that the community, myself, should support that decision,” he said.
On a night where people traditionally venture out to celebrate, Schlegel encouraged them to not change their plans. He wants people in Plum Borough and beyond to support businesses that are choosing to stay open.
“If you feel comfortable in going out for dinner, go right ahead. We are still free people. If you’re uncomfortable, you’re free to stay home as well,” he said.
Restaurants will be allowed to return to 50% indoor dining capacity starting Monday.
