Some North Hills communities planning to bring back summer family activities

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Summer is right around the corner, and families will have plenty to do because several communities are now planning to bring back a lot of activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused many summer events to be canceled last year, including community days in Cranberry Township. Leaders anticipate it will be in full swing this July. The three-day event usually draws up to 30,000 people.

“This year we’re hoping it’s that transition back to normal,” said Pete Geis, Cranberry Township Parks and Recreation director. “Obviously, it all depends on the Pennsylvania Health Department and CDC, and we will make sure everything is done safely.”

Geis told Channel 11 summer concerts will also return starting in June at the newly renovated Rotary Amphitheater; 5k races and movies in the park are also in the works.

The water park will reopen this year, and non-residents are allowed to go, too.

Summer camps are also happening, but in Ross Township, leaders said those won’t start until June 14 because of the vaccination clinic inside the municipal building.

Ross Township is holding outdoor movies, but for the first time, it will be a fundraising opportunity for youth organizations that missed out on collecting donations last year. As for Memorial Day, both Cranberry and Richland Township plan to hold in-person ceremonies.

Ross Township leaders said they will not be holding an in-person ceremony because of the vaccine clinic, and they are now discussing pushing back community days to October.
