Stolen car found submerged in Westmoreland County lake

GREENWALT, Pa. — A stolen car ended up in a Westmoreland County lake Tuesday morning.

“It looks like he went on a side road and then just turned it just straight into the lake,” said Terry Kania

Kania described what she saw this morning at Lake Dom in Greenawalt, Westmoreland County when a car was found submersed.

Her husband had left for work around 9:45 a.m. and she was on the porch when he came rushing back to her.

“He comes up to tell me, ‘Call 911. There's a car in the lake,” Kania said.

She called 911 and first responders from the state police and Westmoreland County Emergency Management rushed to help.

“They were here in 20 minutes, 25 minutes. I was surprised at how fast they got here,” Kania said.

She and others watched from a distance as the dive team went underwater to see if anyone was trapped.

“I was scared because I was afraid somebody might be in the car,” Kania said.

No one was inside the car or in the lake, but details about how it all happened started to unfold.

“I found out that the car was stolen from someone on top of the hill. I don’t know why they went through the trouble of stealing a car and then driving it into the lake,” Kania said.

State police aren’t sure why either and are still looking for the person responsible. It’s unclear how much the recovery efforts will cost the county, but Kania said there were dozens of first responders and that they did use protective gear.
