PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins are mourning the death of one of their own.
A statement from the team shared on Saturday reads, “The entire Penguins organization joins the NHL community in mourning the loss of defenseman Lyle Odelein.”
He was 58 years old.
Odelein played 1,056 games in the NHL between 1989 and 2006.
His final allegiance was to Pittsburgh prior to retiring.
Odelein ranks 30th in the league’s history for most career penalty minutes (2,316).
The Penguins say Odelein was known for his “tough exterior on the ice,” plus a “generous heart and enormous laugh.”
“Our condolences go out to his wife, Laurel, their children and the Odelein family,” the Penguins say.
