200 people impacted by water main break in Pittsburgh’s Hill District

PITTSBURGH — Hundreds of people are without water in Pittsburgh’s Hill District as crews work to repair a water main break.

Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority tells Channel 11 that a 20-inch water main on Francis Street broke Saturday, leaving about 200 people without water.

“Yesterday, I was watching the game, and I was trying to cook, and I noticed the water wasn’t there,” said David Freeman. “It’s cold outside. We need hot water.”

Overnight, crews removed the broken portion of the pipe. Crews are continuing to work on repairs Sunday.

PWSA says the frigid temperatures may be to blame for the break.

“It’s very, very cold,” said Rebecca Zito, PWSA spokesperson. “It obviously was snowing last night. They are not ideal conditions to be working in, but water is a 24/7 service. It’s essential for people.”

PWSA brought it gallons of water Sunday for those without water.

“The water has been out for an extended period of time and we really want to try to do our best effort to accommodate customers,” Zita said.

Water pressure was restored to customers a little after 1 p.m. Any individual households that have not seen their water return should contact PWSA and provide their exact address so officials can investigate the issue.
