LATEST: PennDOT lifts speed restrictions on local roadways

PITTSBURGH — Snow in the Pittsburgh area caused road closures and major delays for drivers Friday evening.

UPDATE 7:51 a.m.:

On Saturday around 2:15 a.m., PennDOT lifted all speed reductions for local interstates.

UPDATE 11:02 p.m.:

PennDOT announced speed limit reductions for local interstates. They are:

  • I-376 eastbound between Exit 36 (Brighton) and end of 376, 45 mph
  • I-376 eastbound between Exit 5 (New Wilmington) and Exit 13A (Poland), 45 mph
  • I-376 westbound between Exit 85 (US 22-Business) and Exit 31 (51-Chippewa), 45 mph
  • Entirety of I-279 northbound, 45 mph; commercial vehicles right lane only
  • Entirety of I-279 southbound, 45 mph; commercial vehicles right lane only
  • I-79 northbound between Exit 59 (I-376 W, Airport) and Exit 113 (PA 208/258, Grove City), 45 mph
  • I-79 southbound between Exit 113(PA 208/258, Grove City) and Exit 59A (I-376 E, Pittsburgh), 45 mph

UPDATE 10:51 p.m.:

The National Weather Service said snowfall is slowing down. Below freezing temperatures will keep roads slick through the morning.

UPDATE 10:30 p.m.:

McKnight Road has reopened, per a Channel 11 crew in the area. Signs in the area are calling for reduced speed.

UPDATE 10:15 p.m.:

Highland Road in McCandless is closed between Harold Place and Sloop Road. Highland Volunteer Fire Department is urging people who can stay in to do so, as conditions deteriorate.

UPDATE 10:10 p.m.:

Chief Meteorologist Stephen Cropper is tracking snow totals across the area.

UPDATE 9:55 p.m.:

McKnight Road’s southbound lanes are shut down towards the City of Pittsburgh because of multiple disabled vehicles, Ross Township police said.
