Teacher hospitalized after breaking up fight between students at McKeesport Area High School

MCKEESPORT, Pa. — A fight between students at McKeesport Area High School on Thursday put a teacher in the hospital.

The district solicitor said the disagreement started Wednesday, outside of school, between two groups of ninth-grade girls. Then a fight broke out in the hallway on Thursday.

Some parents say they’re frustrated they weren’t told about the fight.

“My kids are in that building. I have two kids in that building,” one parent said. “There needs to be something that goes out to parents when something like that happens.”

The solicitor said the teacher suffered a shoulder injury while breaking up the fight.

The district is looking into disciplinary action.

“It was very shocking,” said another parent, who didn’t want to be identified. “If someone is injured, the school is usually really good about contacting parents.”

As for this situation, Channel 11 has been reaching out to the superintendent since Thursday afternoon. We asked the central office about the district’s policy on informing parents about incidents involving students that happen at its schools and asked if those policies and procedures were followed on Thursday.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, we have not heard back.

All of this comes just weeks after the school severed ties with security company homeland intelligence and protective services. After allegations first surfaced that a security guard employed by the company was involved in a sexual relationship with a student. The company was slated to stay on for 60 days while the district interviews replacement options
