Duolingo no longer available on app stores in China as country imposes tighter regulations

Duolingo announced a partnership with live streaming video platform Twitch.

PITTSBURGH — East Liberty-based Duolingo Inc. confirmed its app has been pulled from app stores in China, at least temporarily. The news comes shortly after the Chinese government passed regulations targeting the types of educational services that can be offered in the country.

“We are aware that the Duolingo app is no longer available for download on some app stores in China,” the company said in an emailed statement to the Business Times. “We are working to address the issue and are hopeful that the app will be reinstated in the near term.”

Duolingo also confirmed that existing app users in China will be able to use the platform “as they always do” for now, adding that “China continues to be a high-potential market for Duolingo and we are proud to provide free quality language courses to our users there.”
