New 45,000-square-foot homeless shelter will be built in downtown Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — The City of Pittsburgh and some of its largest employers are joining together to fund a new $21 million homeless shelter downtown in what is being described as an "unprecedented public-private collaboration" between the region's civic leaders, companies and nonprofit organizations.

Once completed, the five-story, 45,000-square-foot shelter will feature 95 beds with room for 42 overflow beds. The facility will operate year-round to provide shelter for Pittsburgh's homeless population and their pets. Additionally, the shelter will offer aid to those who face challenges with addiction, unemployment or health care, and resources will be made available to provide support, self-sufficiency and empowerment to those who use the shelter.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority and the City of Pittsburgh and donated the land for the shelter, which will be located along Second Avenue and adjacent to the Liberty Bridge. Construction for the project should be starting soon, according to county officials, and is scheduled to be completed by January 2022.
