Avella man killed, 3 others hurt in crash in Independence Township

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — One person was killed and three others were injured in a car crash in Washington County Wednesday.

According to state police, the crash occurred in the 400 block of Washington Pike in Independence Township around 4:10 p.m.

Edward Michael King, 58, of Avella, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to state police, he was the only occupant of a vehicle traveling eastbound when he collided with another vehicle traveling westbound.

King was not wearing a seatbelt, according to state police.

The driver of the second car, a Claysville woman in her 30s, was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital. The extent of her injuries was not known, according to state police. Two children were taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital with suspected minor injuries.

Pennsylvania State Police are handling the investigation.
