Community group working to resuscitate dropped development project in Hazelwood

PITTSBURGH — A national affordable housing developer’s proposal to rebuild a focal block of Hazelwood, awarded just before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, is officially not going forward.

In its place, the Hazelwood Initiative is working to reestablish a new redevelopment project for the 4800 block of Second Avenue, a site comprising 30 parcels owned by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh on which Boston-based The Community Builders was chosen to build a 50-unit affordable housing project in a gateway location for the neighborhood as well as the nearby Hazelwood Green master plan.

After The Community Builders dropped the project late last year, a spokeswoman for the URA confirmed it issued a six-month hold from market with the Hazelwood Initiative starting in June to enable the community organization to reestablish a new project on the site, pursuing the same kind of Low-Income Housing Tax Credit TCB was awarded for the project but never used.
