Duquesne Light workers rally in Pittsburgh as IBEW strike reaches 7th day

PITTSBURGH — Workers and supporters rallied in support of striking Duquesne Light workers Wednesday in Pittsburgh’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood.

That strike is now in its seventh day, involving around 1,000 workers and leaders with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Workers tell us all they want is to address key issues, reach a fair deal and get back to work.

They said they were impressed by the amount of support they’ve gotten from the community and elected officials.

“It’s a big moment,” Pittsburgh City Councilperson Bobby Wilson said. “There hasn’t been a strike like this in some time in Pittsburgh. These workers deserve better, and everyone’s here to support that.”

The union says negotiators have made some progress on things like technology, but they continue to push on topics like safety and retirement benefits.

Duquesne Light provided Channel 11 with this statement:

“Since IBEW 29 initiated a strike early Thursday morning, Duquesne Light Company has activated contingency plans focused on delivering safe, reliable electricity to the community and providing responsive customer service.

“We value our partnership with the union and its represented workers. We look forward to continuing negotiations so we can finalize a contract that is fair to our workforce and keeps costs affordable for our customers.”
