PITTSBURGH — It’s not exactly the kind of produce business for which the one-time Pennsylvania Fruit Auction & Sales Building that spans five blocks along Smallman Street was best known for much of the 20th Century, but the building’s redevelopment as the Strip District Terminal is poised to introduce a new venture to deliver fresh produce to the neighborhood’s residents and business owners.
According to an announcement, Getblock Farms, a hydroponic farm venture based in West Aliquippa, is scheduled to start a new delivery service to a refrigerated, climate-controlled food locker to be installed this month at the Terminal.
It’s called “The Veggie Vault” and will be set up in the 20th Street passageway in the building, by which customers can order Getblok’s leafy greens, root vegetables, herbs and flowers on the company’s website and be given a code upon payment by which to access the order delivered to the refrigerated locker.
