‘It’s not fair’: Loved ones remember Cranberry Township man killed in suspected DUI crash

BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. — A Cranberry Township man is being remembered as the “very best.”

B.J. Forsyth, 46, was killed Sunday when police say a drunk man driving a U-Haul blew a stoplight on Route 19 and crashed into the car he was driving.

The U-Haul driver, 34-year-old Darren Martin of Aliquippa, is facing homicide charges.

“I think right now, God is keeping me numb. I think there will be a time later where I’ll be angry about it,” Forsyth’s wife Jen said.

She was in Louisville, Kentucky, at a cheerleading competition with the couple’s daughter when she got a phone call from one of her sons telling her Forsyth had died.

“I remember screaming ‘no, no.’ One of the coaches had to take the phone off of me and talk to the police while the other moms surrounded me and were literally holding me up off the ground.”

She tells Channel 11 he would do anything for anyone.

“This vibrant person just came forward to help them, to counsel them, to encourage them. That is who B.J. was and that is how I want B.J. remembered,” Jen said.

Friends are remembering him, too.

“I don’t think it’s truly sunk in; the volume of his loss,” Forsyth’s friend of 25 years Joe Augustine said.

“We’re trying to make sense of a senseless act. We feel for his family,” Jim Ransbottom said. The two met half a decade ago at the North Hills Lodge No. 716 where they were members.

“It’s not fair. But, we’re going to get through this,” Jen said.

Forsyth was the primary provider for the family and they’d just moved into their Cranberry Township home a few months ago. There is a fundraiser set up to benefit Jen and the couple’s three kids.
