In a city more divided than Berlin circa the Cold War, there is one agreement. The Pittsburgh Penguins (2-1-0) and Washington Capitals (1-1-0) do not like each other, but watching Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin tangle in the next-to-last battle between the titans in Washington is a treat.
Ovechkin put to rest a year’s worth of conjecture and speculation Monday when he announced this would be his 22nd and final season. Ovechkin and Crosby were the fresh faces of a reborn NHL emerging from the lost 2004-05 lockout season. Ovechkin was the first overall pick in 2004, and Crosby was the first overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. The duo reignited hockey and the bitter rivalry between the teams.
Wednesday is the penultimate matchup between the teams and rivals at Capital One Arena. The next time they face off in Washington will be the final game of the season and Ovechkin’s NHL career.
