WESTMORELAND COUNTY — A man charged with burglary and bribery was in court Wednesday for a scheduled preliminary hearing.
Christopher Sherrick did not have an attorney, but was offered a tentative plea deal if he completes probation and a mental health evaluation.
“Learn from your mistakes and move on, absolutely. We all make mistakes. None of us are perfect,” Sherrick said.
Sherrick said his mind was not in the right place when he was charged with breaking into a Mount Pleasant Township family’s home last month and accused of taking naps in the homeowner’s bed and making himself at home for hours.
“I was going through some transitions in life. I was homeless and, at the time, I was not in my right state of mind, but I’ve been through a lot of mental health places in and out, and got my head right and I’m doing a lot better today,” Sherrick said.
He will avoid jail time if he completes three years of probation and a mental health evaluation and treatment.
“Going to seek some treatment, do the right thing, stay on the right path and go from there,” he explained.
Channel 11 talked to the homeowner who found Sherrick at her house last month.
She said she was creeped out by the whole encounter and found Sherrick’s wallet, car keys and phone charger on her nightstand with her bed covers pulled back.
Sherrick allegedly offered troopers $400,000 if they let him go that day.
On Wednesday, he said he made a mistake and hopes to move on from this.
“They’re very, very forgiving people and I feel like this is a mile marker, and a path I have to get over and do the right thing,” Sherrick said.
The deal is not official until a judge signs off on it.
The homeowners said they are satisfied with these terms and they are hoping he gets the help he needs.
