The Penguins are adding a new defenseman in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers.

According to a release from the team, the Penguins acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney in exchange for forward Filip Hallander.

Stastney, 26, is signed through the 2026-27 season, and his contract carries an average annual value of $1.525 million.

Last season, Stastney split his season with the Oilers and Predators and set career highs in multiple categories: games played (66), goals (2), assists (8), points (10) and blocked shots (63).

In 117 games across his four seasons of professional experience, he’s notched four goals, 15 assists and 19 points.

Hallander spent much of last season sidelined with a blood clot in his leg and a subsequent lung issue. He started this season with a goal during the second period of the Penguins’ dominant season-opening 7-0 win over the Flyers and was named the first star of the game.
