Pittsburgh International Airport airline contractor brought loaded gun to airport Saturday, TSA says

PITTSBURGH — TSA officials stopped its third gun of the month at Pittsburgh International Airport.

This time, TSA says the loaded 9mm handgun stopped on Saturday belonged to an air carrier contractor.

“This is an instance where our TSA officers stopped what could have been an insider threat, someone who was approved to have access to secure areas of the airport,” explained Gerardo Spero, TSA’s federal security director for Pennsylvania. “This individual’s airport credentials have been confiscated and deactivated, without which he cannot work at the airport.”

The other two guns TSA intercepted in January were stopped on the same day at two different checkpoints.

Last year, 42 guns were detected at Pittsburgh International Airport checkpoints — the most of any Pennsylvania airport.

Civil penalties for bringing a weapon into a checkpoint can reach up to $15,000, depending on the specific weapon and the circumstances.
