Sinkhole forces partial closure of Shaler Township road

Shaler Sinkhole

SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A sinkhole forced a partial road closure on Elmwood Drive in Shaler Township on Thursday morning, alarming neighbors and prompting a quick response from township crews.

The stretch of road was reduced to one lane after the sinkhole opened up along Elmwood Drive. Although it has since been covered, residents say the situation was unsettling.

“This is the first time I’ve ever seen something this close,” said neighbor Artie Mignella.

“I woke up this morning, and I said, ‘It shouldn’t be that bad of a day!’, until I got a message that there was a sinkhole that opened up in front of my house,” he said.

Shaler Township Public Works crews responded by covering the sinkhole and closing off part of the roadway to ensure traffic could continue moving safely, particularly for school buses traveling through the area.

The township’s director of public works said crews plan to return to replace storm sewer pipes in the area. Officials believe aging infrastructure likely contributed to the collapse.
