Former state rep. who attended Jan. 6 rally for former President Trump to run for Lt. Governor

PITTSBURGH — Former state. Rep. Rick Saccone, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump but lost a congressional race to Conor Lamb, will run for Pennsylvania’s Lt. Governor seat.

Saccone attended the Jan. 6 rally for Trump before the U.S. Capitol was stormed by an angry crowd. Saccone posted a video of himself at the rally.

“They broke down the gates. They’re macing them up there. We’re trying to run out all the evil people in there and all the rhinos who have betrayed our president. We’re going to run them out of their offices,” Saccone said in that video.

Saccone said he wasn’t serious and wasn’t aware of what was actually happening when he posted the video. He took the video down once he learned of the violence at the Capitol.

After viewing the video, officials at St. Vincent College, where he taught, launched an investigation. Saccone later resigned from his position at the college.

Saccone is scheduled to make the official announcement on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Youghiogheny Country Club.
