Intense storms topple massive trees in Pittsburgh region

LIBERTY, Pa. — Severe storms rolled through western Pennsylvania for a second consecutive day on Monday, bringing down more trees and causing more power outages.

One of the hard-hit areas was Liberty Borough.

A pair of 80-foot pine trees were toppled at Marge Johnson’s property on B Street.

“It’s just hard to see something like this happen to your home,” she said.

Now Johnson will have to go through her insurance to handle the cleanup and repairs.

“The gutter is off and hanging there, but there’s no electrical wires or cables, and the whole end of the porch is crushed,” she said.

Dave Leitzell, a tree removal specialist who lives nearby, said there is at least $4,000 worth of damage to Johnson’s home. He spent the day checking on neighbors to see if they need any help.

“There are people calling me, but I’m just here to help them out. We are going to be busy for a while,” he said.
