Police close roads, CalU sends alerts after reported shooting near campus

California Borough — Police and campus officials warned students near the California University of Pennsylvania to stay away from the corner of Third and Union Streets as they investigated a reported shooting.

Police said the incident happened around 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday.

Officials cordoned off a two-block area of the town while they investigated. No injuries were reported, but police said they had a person of interest in custody.

“We actually live right by where it happened and we heard it and we were walking to class. He though it was a firecracker,” said student Leo Ryan.

Students Channel 11 talked with said it was concerning getting the alerts.

“I read it and I didn’t know anything about it and I went to my email and it was scary because it’s so close to campus. There’s not security right there so anybody can come on campus,” said student Nakaiya James.

Students said they were thankful for the quick response from law enforcement and were thankful it didn’t happen on campus.
