Search party hoping to find Fayette County woman missing for 2 weeks

UNIONTOWN, Pa. — UPDATE (3/11/21): Melanie Prokop was was found dead Wednesday afternoon in North Union Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.

ORIGINAL STORY: The family of a Fayette County woman who has been missing for nearly two weeks is desperately seeking answers as a search party was held Thursday morning.

Melanie Prokop, 62, was last seen driving her car about 7 p.m. on Jan. 1, police said. Her car was found in a wooded area along Jumonville Road in North Union Township the next evening, but Prokop was not.

“She could be anywhere out there so someone could’ve dumped her car out here. We just don’t have any leads of her being anywhere else,” Lizzie Prokop said.

Her mother’s last known interaction was with a police officer. She asked the officer for directions. The officer helped her, but her family believes she might have gotten lost after that.

Prokop is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighs 120 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes. Her family said she has been declining physically and mentally.

Thursday’s search party got underway at 10 a.m. in Hopwood.

Search dogs, drones and helicopters have been used in previous search efforts.
