RIO DE JANEIRO — Clauvino da Silva, a Brazilian gang leader and drug trafficker, has been found dead in his jail cell in Rio de Janeiro, according to authorities.
BBC News reported that the news comes after authorities thwarted da Silva's attempt to escape from prison by disguising himself as his teenage daughter, complete with a silicon mask, a black wig, glasses, a bra, T-shirt, jeans, flip-flops and a gray hoodie.
Authorities said da Silva left his daughter behind in a cell as he tried to escape. He was serving a 73-year jail sentence.
AFP reported that officials found da Silva dead in his cell Tuesday, saying he appeared to die by suicide. He had been alone in a maximum security prison cell since his escape attempt.
An investigation into his death has been launched.
