Corvette slams into building in Chateau; driver, passenger hurt

PITTSBURGH — In a video obtained by Channel 11 News, a driver can be seen barreling down Preble Avenue Monday night. As it gets closer, sparks fly when it hits the ground, going over a slight hump in the road. It then swerves, just missing the front end of a parked 18-wheeler.

After that the driver loses control.

The result, the vehicle, a black Corvette, slammed into a building, taking out a metal pole and destroying the front passenger side of the vehicle.

Police have confirmed that the accident took place in the Chateau neighborhood. Officers said that the driver and passenger both were hurt and are suffering from back and head injuries but at this time it’s unclear how severe.

“Thank God they weren’t killed in the car,” said Gary Beech, a nearby worker.

Gary Beech saw that video on Facebook on Monday morning and immediately recognized the building: it’s where he’s worked for the past ten years.

“It looked like he swerved and missed the front of that truck, lost control and hit the corner of the building,” Beech said.

Beech said not only is the video troubling because of how fast the driver was going, he says that the driver may be drag racing for a crowd.

“This is all slow-moving vehicles in an industrial area. It’s big trucks and vans,” Beech said.

He said workers from his company load up supplies at all hours of the day.

“It could have been deadly. We have people coming down here all the time pushing loads of goods to load up. It could have been terrible,” Beech said.

We asked Beech if he’s ever seen anything like this before in the area and he said no, and hopes this isn’t the start of a new trend.

“Hope that’s the last time that happens,” Beech said.

Police said that they are currently investigating this crash, and we will have more details once they are available.
