Johns Hopkins air quality expert weighs in on safety in East Palestine after train derailment

PITTSBURGH — An air quality expert from Johns Hopkins University weighed in on just how safe he believes it is in East Palestine right now.

He talked exclusively with Channel 11′s Susan Koeppen on Thursday, and said he has a lot of concerns about the air quality there.

Peter DeCarlo, atmospheric chemist at Johns Hopkins, said people who live near the derailment site have every right to be concerned.

DeCarlo said air monitoring with handheld devices is not enough, and that sampling needs to be done in three locations: upwind, downwind and at the crash site.
