PITTSBURGH — A coalition of local environmental groups and Allegheny County residents rallied downtown Monday to call on County Executive Rich Fitzgerald to withdraw his support from the fracking and petrochemical industries in the region, but Fitzgerald declined to comply.
The coalition presented a letter signed by about 300 people and 70 organizations. The letter asked Fitzgerald to issue a public statement withdrawing his support and also to endorse these new Pennsylvania bills — House Bills 1353, 1354 and 1355 and Senate Bills 644, 645 and 646.
Anais Peterson, an Earthworks organizer who co-led the rally, said the coalition joined forces to call for change after Texas Sen. Ted Cruz tweeted in January 2021: “By rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, President Biden indicates that he’s more interested in the views of the citizens of Paris than in the jobs of the citizens of Pittsburgh.”
