PITTSBURGH — Strip District-based autonomous vehicle startup Argo AI LLC confirmed reports of recent layoffs at the company, making it one of the first tech firms in the region to become part of a broader trend where an industry downturn is resulting in many tech companies opting for workforce reductions across the country.

In an email statement to the Pittsburgh Business Times and in response to reports of layoffs at the company, Argo AI Global Communications Director Alan Hall said, “with incredible growth and progress made in our mission to deploy driverless vehicles, we are making prudent adjustments to our business plan to best continue on a path for success.”

Argo declined to disclose further specifics, such as how many workers it laid off, citing an internal policy. It reiterated that its previously released employment figures of more than 800 workers in Pittsburgh and more than 1,600 globally are still accurate numbers for the company.
