3 classrooms in RK Mellon Elementary School closed due to mold

The Ligonier Valley School District is addressing high mold levels in part of R.K. Mellon Elementary School.

In a letter Thursday, Superintendent Matthew Mols said the district became aware of “humid conditions” in several rear classrooms near the playground Aug. 19.

The district began increased cleaning in the areas and running dehumidifiers.

Air samples taken Monday and returned Wednesday showed relatively high levels of Aspergillus/Penicillium in three classrooms, Mols said.

The district consulted with an indoor air environmentalist from Allegheny Mountain Research, who said the school didn’t need to be closed.

Out of an abundance of caution, Mols said, the three classrooms have been closed for remediation efforts.

Firewater Rescue is doing the remediation, and a verification test will be performed before students and staff are let back into the classrooms, Mols said.

“We understand that information regarding indoor air quality can understandably raise questions and concerns for families,” Mols’ letter reads. “Please know that we are committed to addressing this matter carefully, responsibly and transparently. We will continue working with qualified environmental professionals and will take the steps necessary to ensure that the affected spaces are appropriately remediated before they are returned to use.”
