PITTSBURGH — District Attorney Stephen Zappala said charges will be filed as the investigation into Pittsburgh’s finances and allegations of “bid-rigging” continue.
“If that was an attempt to intimidate us or keep us from doing what we have to do, that ain’t gonna happen. I promise you that,” District Attorney Steven Zappala told Channel 11
District Attorney Steven Zappala didn’t mince words when we asked him about accusations of a “witch hunt” against former Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey and his administration.
Earlier this week, a search warrant was unsealed showing the DA is investigating Gainey for his use of no-bid contracts and misspending city funds.

Zappala said the Gainey administration was not cooperative until the DA’s investigators got that search warrant.
“How dare you look at the fiscal condition of the city and how dare you question the spending of any administration? We do that on a regular basis,” Zappala said.
Detectives interviewed city council solicitor Dan Friedson, who said Gainey and Pittsburgh city councilman Khari Mosley both benefited from the no-bid contracts.
Earlier this week, Mosley said those allegations were false, and mayor Gainey never got back to us.
Forensic accountants are still reviewing thousands of documents, and as of now, there is no timetable on when charges will be filed.
“This is early in this process and this is a white-collar public corruption review. We are going through the numbers right now. You can see from the scope of the warrant that was already executed, there are a lot of different funds that we have interest in reviewing,” Zappala said.
Zappala said Gainey has not yet been interviewed in relation to the investigation.
