Duolingo and Taco Bell roll out multilingual hot sauce packets in global collaboration

Duo Habanero

Duolingo is turning up the heat in a new way. The Pittsburgh edtech company is teaming with Taco Bell to launch a limited edition condiment created exclusively as part of its collaboration with the popular fast food chain. Taco Bell is taking its National Taco Day celebration worldwide, promoting food and language.

Duo Habanero debuts Oct. 6, or Global Taco Day, at participating Taco Bell restaurants across the U.S., Canada, Australia, China, India, Spain and the UK, while supplies last. U.S. fans get one free Duo Habanero Sauce packet with the purchase of a Doritos Locos Taco. Packets can be bought for 20 cents each. The sauce packets will bear taco-inspired sayings across nine languages — English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Portuguese, German, Korean, Mandarin and Japanese. Internationally, packet assortments will reflect the native language and some of the most popular languages Duolingo users are learning in each participating market.

“Language and food are two of the most powerful ways we connect with culture and with each other,” Emmanuel Orssaud, Duolingo chief marketing officer, said in a prepared statement. “Taco is a rare word that travels easily across cultures, making it a fun starting point for getting people curious about language.”
