Health systems stepping up AI deployment, UPMC report finds

PITTSBURGH — Artificial intelligence has made major inroads into hospitals and health systems with most using AI, according to a new report from the UPMC’s Center for Connected Medicine and KLAS Research.

More than 90% of health systems in the survey are using AI with more than half (52%) deployed for clinical documentation and a third for either revenue cycle, billing or coding. But 63% of the health systems said their strategy was in its earlier stages and only 44% have a dedicated system in place to evaluate the safety and performance of AI.

The report,“Validation and Trust: The Governance of AI Solutions at Health Systems,” surveyed 27 health care leaders across the U.S. The leaders were at the VP level or above and nine of the organizations had 1,000 beds or more, eight had between 501 and 1,000 beds, and the rest were either in smaller health systems or ambulatory care centers.
