SHALER, Pa. — Traffic on a busy section of Vilsack Road in Shaler is coming to a halt for the next four months to make way for $1.4 million-worth of imperative construction improvements.
“This bridge is actually under a weight restriction right now due to its condition, so we’re pretty eager to get this bridge completely replaced,” said Jason Molinero, Allegheny County Public Works’ Deputy Director.
The replacement of the visibly rusted bridge over the south branch of Pine Creek will shut down Vilsack Road from Morewood Road to Sunnyfield Drive.
Plans also call for new pavement, road painting, guide rails, and signs.
“This project has been in development for quite a few years,” said Molinero. “It probably dates back to about 2013 for preliminary engineering.”
According to Molinero, traffic will detour using Mt. Royal Boulevard, Scott Avenue, Clare Street, West Sutter Road, and Thompson Run Road.
Anyone who lives on Vilsack Road will still be able to get to their homes during the closure.
“It’s going to be a short term disruption of a few months, for their normal commuting routes,” said Molinero. “We have some alternative routes that we show as a detour, but there’s also a lot of savvy drivers out there that’ll be able to figure out alternative means of getting where they need to go.”
The project and road closure are expected to last until November.
